What on Earth is an AI Token (And Why the Cost is Almost Nothing). AI agents are now 75% free so why the difference?

I get asked this quite often lately.
People hear the word “token” and their eyes glaze over. It sounds technical, expensive, and probably designed to confuse ordinary folk like us. So let’s strip it back to plain English.
An AI token is simply the little chunk of text that these language models actually read and write.
Not whole words. Not sentences. Just small pieces.
A short common word is usually one token.
A longer word might get split into two or three.
Punctuation counts too.
As a rough guide, 100 tokens is about 75 ordinary English words. That’s all you really need to remember.
Why does this matter?
Because every time you ask an AI to write something, both what you type in and what it writes back get counted in tokens. And the companies charge by the million tokens.
Sounds scary, doesn’t it?
Until you look at the actual prices.
The real cost of writing content with AI
I recently worked out what it would cost to produce a decent amount of content.
Thirty blog posts of around 1,000 words each.
Thirty ordinary questions.
A couple of images.
On the cheaper, perfectly usable models the total cost came out at roughly 10 to 15 cents.
Even if I used a stronger mid-range model, it was still well under a couple of dollars.
That’s not a misprint.
For the price of a cup of coffee (and a cheap one at that), you can generate a month’s worth of solid blog content. The sort of content that used to take days or weeks to write by hand.
What this means for people like us
A lot of retirees and small business owners still think AI is either too complicated or too expensive to bother with. I understand the hesitation — I felt the same way a few years ago.
But the numbers tell a different story.
The technology has become remarkably affordable. You don’t need a big budget. You don’t need to be a tech expert. Plus, you just need to understand that the meter is running in tiny fractions of a cent, not dollars.
Of course, AI doesn’t replace good thinking, real experience, or a human voice. It just removes a lot of the heavy lifting. You still decide what to say and how to say it. The machine just helps you say it faster.
A quiet opportunity
For anyone building a blog, an affiliate site, or simply trying to get useful content online without spending every evening at the keyboard, this changes the equation.
The barrier isn’t money anymore.
It’s mostly just getting started and learning how to give clear instructions.
I’m 81 and still learning new tricks. This is one of the better ones I’ve come across in recent years — not because it’s flashy, but because it’s practical and surprisingly cheap.
If you’ve been putting off trying AI for your writing because you thought it would cost a fortune, you can relax. The cost is about as close to free as these things get.
When you use ACE at Wealthy Affiliate the cost is all included in your monthly allowance and the same with Kre8or
