How I Turned Decades of Life Experience into a Profitable Blog at 80
I’m 80 years old.
I’ve been in business longer than most people on the internet have been alive. Radio paging, mobile phones, telephone answering services, rebilling systems — I’ve built and run them all. I’ve negotiated licences in China in the middle of winter and watched entire industries change overnight.
When I first looked at the internet, I thought the same thing a lot of people my age think: “This is for the young ones.”
I was wrong.
The truth is, the people who have lived the longest often have the biggest advantage online. Readers are tired of 25-year-olds giving advice they learned from a YouTube video last week. They want someone who has actually been through the ups and downs, made the mistakes, and come out the other side.

What should you write about?
Don’t try to write about everything. Pick one area where you already have knowledge and interest. Some of the best topics I’ve seen work for people our age are:
- Gardening and growing food in small spaces
- Practical home repairs and woodworking
- Travel on a sensible budget
- Looking after your health and staying active
- Helping other older people start a small online income
- Classic cars, hobbies, or any craft you’ve spent years learning
The key is to write about something you actually care about. If you’re interested, the writing comes easier and people can tell the difference.
How the money side works
You write helpful articles.
Inside those articles you recommend products or services you genuinely believe in. When someone clicks your link and buys, you earn a commission. The customer pays the same price. You get paid for the recommendation.
That’s affiliate marketing in plain English. No stock to buy. No customers to chase. No warehouse.
